Normal and Diabetic Blood Sugar Levels

Apr 21, 2024

Elevated Blood Glucose is a key marker of Metabolic Syndrome, Pre-Diabetes and Diabetes.

Normal blood sugar levels

For most adults, a healthy blood sugar ranges between 4.0 to 5.4 mmol/L when fasting and less than 7.8 mmol/L two hours after eating. These levels may slightly vary depending on factors such as age, health condition, and the time since the last meal.

How to maintain healthy blood glucose levels

  • Eating a healthy diet
  • Regular physical activity
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Reducing alcohol consumption
  • Minimising processed and high sugar foods
  • Avoiding smoking

We recognise that addressing the above factors can be challenging and sometimes overwhelming. That's why we've developed a comprehensive Metabolic Program, run by accredited health professionals to support you every step of the way.

Type 2 Diabetes: What should my blood glucose levels be?

Targets for self-monitoring of blood glucose levels are 4.0–7.0 mmol/L for fasting and preprandial, and 5.0–10.0 mmol/L for two-hour postprandial. (RACGP)

However, target ranges may differ depending on individual circumstances and treatment plans, so it's crucial to consult with a healthcare professional for personalised guidance.

How Diabetes is diagnosed by your health practitioner

Fasting Blood Glucose (FBG):

  • Measures blood sugar after an overnight fast.
  • Provides insight into the body's ability to regulate blood sugar levels without food intake.

HbA1c (Glycated Hemoglobin):

  • Reflects the average blood sugar level over the past 2-3 months.
  • Indicates long-term glucose control by measuring the percentage of glucose attached to hemoglobin in red blood cells.

Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT):

  • Evaluates how the body processes glucose after drinking a standardized glucose solution.
  • Helps diagnose diabetes, impaired glucose tolerance, and gestational diabetes by measuring blood sugar levels at intervals over 2-3 hours.

On Saturday, January 14th, the Metabolic Health Foundation held its very first Metabolic Mile event at Albert Park. Individuals of all ages joined in the fun accompanied by their furry friends, getting their steps in for the day. The event emphasised how crucial physical activity, like walking, is for our metabolic health. Walking at a brisk pace or moderate intensity is an aerobic exercise. When you do aerobic activities regularly over time, you can see many health benefits: Blood glucose (blood sugar) levels go down Insulin sensitivity goes up Heart health improves Metabolism increases Weight loss or maintenance becomes easier Blood pressure decreases HDL (“good”) cholesterol increases LDL (“bad”) cholesterol decreases Source ( https://diabetes.org/health-wellness/fitness/benefits-walking )
